Lainzer Tiergarten Mapping Nature Research Stadtwildnis

mapping the forest

Based on our research we started mapping different topics, such as the tree population, wind and water conditions, the light pollution, the development throughout history and the sources of noise around the forest.

History of the Lainzer Tiergarten
The Lainzer Tiergarten has first been written about in 1457 as „Thier- und Saugarten“ near Hütteldorf. In 1560 emperor Ferdinand I. bought the Auhof with the surrounding forests and built a wooden fence around this hunting ground.

In 1781 emperor Josef II. acquires the hunting rights for the imperial court in other parts of the Tiergarten.
Between 1782 and 1787 the first wall out of stone is built. At that Time, the Tiergarten basically had the same dimensions as today.

In the mid-19th century the forest becomes a „Hofärarisches Eigentum“: this means the areal is property owned by the state, but the imperial family still has the right to use it how they wish.
After World War I and the downfall of the monarchy, the Tiergarten was openend for the population of Vienna.

In 1941 the Tiergarten was declared as a nature reserve, but during the war the meadows were used agriculturally.
In the late 50s, tourism increased and in 1969 the oak forest „Johannser Kogel“ becomes a natural monument.

The Map below shows the evolution in size and use of the Lainzer Tiergarten and the surrounding housig areas. The size of the forest has almost stayed the same since 1829, except for housing areas in the North. The Typologies are mostly residential buildings that were built after 1850 and the north-western part contains bigger commercially used buildings.

The upper part of the Lainzer Tiergarten connects to the a 3 lane road that links the highway to the city.
In the map below you can see the higher noise level (70 to 75 dB an above) around the main streets that extends into the site of the forest.

The light pollution has become a world wide problem.

In the northern part above the Lainzer Tiergarten runs the river Wienfluss (that flows to the site of the Stadtwildnis) and therefore this area is a flooding zone with waterbasins.
